Toto - Focus mahraganat

Cairo
Creation

The dancers and choreographers Toto (Mohamed Mahmud Mohamed Ibrahim) and Islam Elarabi each explore a fusion of mahraganat—often described as “the sound of the Egyptian revolution”—with contemporary dance, in the duet Pleine Lune and the solo Just One Tile. These are two highly personal reappropriations of a cultural and social movement that embodies the heart and soul of Cairo’s working-class neighbourhoods, at the intersection of history and modernity, traditional music and electronic sound.

Pleine Lune brings Toto and Islam Elarabi together for the first time around a shared passion: mahraganat. Emerging before the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 and amplified during that period, this genre ignited the streets and popular districts of Cairo where both artists grew up. Though rejected by the cultural establishment, it achieved meteoric popular success.

An event organised as part of the Saison Méditerranée 2026.
